Thinking Start-Ups: Independent study cards

This book contains more than one hundred activity cards, printed two to a page. Each card presents a mini-lesson dealing with a thinking skill or concept such as:

• Analysing
• Brainstorming
• Evaluating
• Hypothesising
• Organising
• Translating

Every lesson begins with a brief definition then the quick 'Try this....' exercise allows students to explore the skill or concept. In most cases, the activity takes less than ten minutes and requires only a pencil and piece of paper. A follow-up 'Extra project' challenges students to apply the knowledge they've acquired, for example, by writing a story, doing library research or conducting an experiment.

The cards can be used in three ways: as an independent thinking centre, for large group instruction and/or for a thought-provoking home exercise.
