Going to the Hairdresser (Off We Go)

Written by Avril Webster
Illustrated by David Ryley

Storybooks created by an Irish Mum for her own son Stephen – but… more than just storybooks!

Off We Go books are beautifully illustrated, engaging social storybooks for children that explain ‘what comes next’ on an outing. They are designed to help children to get through the task sequentially making it easier for them. The colourful books are very suitable for children with autism or other social communication difficulties. They are also useful for children who are learning English as an additional language.

Each book provides the following benefits:

  • Children will learn day to day skills
  • Supports language development and communication
  • Builds confidence and self-esteem
  • Provides children with structure and routine
  • Shows children ‘what comes next’ to prepare them for new experiences
  • Improve the quality of life for children and their families – when children know what is happening they can manage better and everyone is happier
Each book provides the following features:

  • Simple, clear, large pictures and accompanying text describing the task
  • A sequence of 12 steps bringing the child through the task, as recommended by speech and language therapists
  • The same multi-ethnic family of characters is used, some of whom have a disability, to promote familiarity and learning

Going to the Hairdresser describes the activity of going to the hairdresser using 12 pictures in a sequence. This book is particularly aimed at pre-school children and children with special needs to support language development and communication. By using this book to prepare your child for going to the hairdresser, they will be happier and able to manage the experience. It is also helpful to use the book as a prompt to play hairdressers at home or in school. Use the book as an aid to talk about the noise at the hairdressers; turn on your own hairdryer. Use some gel to talk about someone feeling your hair and the new smells you find at the hairdressers. Show your child that you have to sit still in the hairdressers chair, perhaps you sit still and let your child do your hair! The book also provides for an opportunity to talk about the importance of grooming and looking nice.
