Safer Sexual Behaviour Board Game & Book For Children

    Life Skills, Sex Education, Primary

A game to enable discussion with children about ‘OK/ Not OK’ or unsafe sexual behaviour in schools, including issues of risk to Child Sexual Exploitation

by Carol Laugharne and Laura Walker

This game is for teachers, learning mentors or SENCOs to play with a small group of up to six children aged 5-11 (or older if they have learning needs) where there have been worries about low- level sexual behaviour. It will enable such children to understand what’s OK and what’s NOT OK in terms of sexual behaviour.

Children remember more of what they have learnt through taking part in discussions with other children while having fun playing. They will identify with the visual depictions of a school day – this is particularly important for those children with Autism Spectrum Disorders or learning needs. Players take it in turns to move around the board answering questions from one of eight areas:

    • School bus
    • Classroom
    • Playtime
    • Games
    • PE
    • Lunchtime
    • Toilets
    • Trips out
    • Walking home
Guidance for responding to each scenario is given in the instruction manual but the best results will be had from facilitating a group discussion so that the children can hear each other’s views – the facilitator can then ‘round up’ the discussion drawing on relevant points from the guidance.

Includes some ‘just for fun’ and blank cards to personalise for your group.

    Ages 5-11

Helping Children to Learn about Safer Sexual Behaviour Book

This unique resource comprises a therapeutic workbook and storybook, designed to be used as an early intervention with children within the school setting who display concerning sexual behaviour.

    The workbook contains:
A series of activities with accompanying user-friendly advice including how to broach difficult subjects, how to engage with children who have additional needs and how to create conditions of safety to enable the necessary conversations and activities to happen.

The programme of work culminates in the creation of a unique and dynamic Safety Plan which is developed collaboratively with the child (as the expert) together with key adults in their lives. The Safety Plan is designed to meet the needs of the child and gives attention to their cultural context and specific likes/interests; this ultimately keeps them and other children safe from further incidents or allegations of sexually concerning behaviour.

The accompanying storybook, Billy and the Tingles, employs narrative therapy, telling the story of a child with sexually concerning behaviour and addressing contemporary issues of exposure to pornography.
